Need to Know: February 2016

Social media is constantly changing. We know it can be hard to keep up, so each month we provide you with a quick round-up of the latest news in the space. We stay on top of all the changes so you don’t have to.

Twitter’s New Timeline Tweaks: Last week’s rumors on Twitter’s new algorithm changes and timeline tweak had users in a frenzy. The popular platform gave news that it was changing its algorithm so it becomes more tailored to you.

Here’s the nutshell version of the major change:

  • You’ll find tweets have been re-ordered to appear at the top of your feed, out of sequence. Tweets that Twitter considers “high-value” will now be pushed to the top for you to view. The idea behind it is to show you tweets you may have missed that you would most likely enjoy, based on your interests and activity.
  • Not to worry, if you’re not feeling the new Twitter stream, you have the option to turn it off, for now.

Stepped Up Security: As Instagram continues to grow in popularity, the platform has started to roll out a new security feature in the login process. Similar to it’s parent company, Facebook, the new authentication process will allow users to opt for a temporary code to be texted to them as an additional step in the login process.

Facebook’s Reactions Toolbar: Earlier this month, Facebook officially announced its most recent addition to the platform known as ‘Reactions.’ The toolbar “utlizes the rising trend of emoji” and gives users five new alternatives to the Like button. They are: Love, Haha, Wow, Sad and Angry.

What are your thoughts on this new feature? Let us know in comments!
